lundi le 9 decembre

Il y a deux semaines qui restent! There are two weeks remaining! And we hit the ground running as we launched into French. We learned our new grammar point of the week - the rest of the possessives. Our = notre/nos, your (plural) = votre/vos, their = leur/leurs. We also worked on making connections using a French text, "La chute libre". Don't be surprised to hear your child being a bit too excited about parachuting...In language, we introduced a new task. We are going to be doing book talks! Students will need to prepare (key word: PREPARE) a 2-3 minute presentation on a book they've been reading recently. This presentation must include:
-A brief summary of the book - a "back of the book" summary.
-Whether they liked the book, and why or why not.
-A connection they made to the book, and how it helped them understand or appreciate the book more.
-A short read aloud. Students will have to read 1-2 paragraphs of their book for the class.

I'll be looking to see the depth of the connections made, and also for an engaging presentation. We'll be spending lots of time discussing how to do this in class, so everyone will be ready for next week!

Finally, in math, we began our measurement unit with a discussion on how to convert between different units of measurement. Did you know that you can measure the length of your commute to work in millimetres, and the width of your fingernails in kilometres? It's true! It just takes some multiplying or dividing by ten. This will be a very engaging unit with lots of real-world examples and interesting discussions.

Tonight's homework is:
-Give the mental math, multiplication, and addition/subtraction one last look tonight in preparation for the test tomorrow.
-Keep working on the French plays! We will be presenting them on Friday of this week.
-A few students did not finish their recounts. Those need to be completed ASAP.

Have a wonderful night! See you all tomorrow!

(By the way - some students were asking me today about how big or small units of measurement could be. I remembered a few off my head from my science days, but if you want a more complete list, check out the second table on this website. Remember, these units can get so big/small that it's hard to even imagine them! Also, this link has another explanation for converting between units, if it helps.)
